Rotting Christ have stood the test of time. ”Rituals” is an album that has obviously been written by veterans. The Greek legends inject a 27 years career, 12 albums, and more than 1.200 shows into their songwriting.
With confidence and skills derived from experience, each song represents its own sonic universe. Guitarist and vocalist Sakis Tolis in collaboration with his brother Themis on drums achieve a perfect balance of amalgamating their classic and unique style of riffing and rhythm with exciting new elements sprinkled in to keep their material exciting and fresh. Carefully chosen guests are being added for better effect, not name dropping such as the spoken words of Nick Holmes(Paradise Lost) on “A Voice Like Thunder” or Samael’sVorph mesmerizingly quoting from Charles Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs Du Mal” throughout the song “Les Litanies De Satan“. Goosebumps moments such as these are liberally sprinkled throughout the record, which manages the feat to sound rock solid and made out of one heavy piece as well as diverse and far ranging at the same time.
The experienced is enhanced by Jens Bogren’s equally clear and transparent yet also massive as well as sombre mix and mastering at his widely renowned Fascination Street Studios (Amorphis, Borknagar, Moonspell, Devin Towsend, and many more).
A mature album such as ”Rituals” comes with a history. Rotting Christ were founded as early as 1987 by Sakis Tolis and his brother Themis. They started out playing death/grind, but had already turned to darker paths by the time their debut full-length ”Thy Mighty Contract”(1993) was unleashed.
On the following seven albums covering a ten year period from ”Non Serviam” (1994) to ”Sanctus Diavolos”(2004), Rotting Christ steadily refined their style by experimenting with elements from death, heavy and gothic metal without betraying their black roots. At the same time the band went from underground heroes to headliner status. Yet with the highly acclaimed ”Theogonia” (2007) the Greek stalwarts added an unmistakable native element to their sound, which gave their ninth full-length a very distinctive and individual twist. With this album, Rotting Christ had fully defined their style, to be explored with later releases.
Such a masterpiece can hardly be surpassed, but Rotting Christ held their ground with ”’AEALO’ (2010). Their country’s rich ancient heritage was translated into the universal language of metal with added female choirs, ancient reed pipes as well as folkloristic melodies and rhythms. Their latest masterpiece ”Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy” (2013) took this musical and lyrical concept another step further, confirming Rotting Christ’s individual sound incorporating subtle female vocals, piano, bagpipes, horns, and other means. All of these elements are expertly combined and enhanced by excellent songwriting.
Now ”Rituals’‘ marks another step in the evolution of the Greek masters. Buckle up for a fascinating musical ride through ancient cults and mythologies evoking strong feelings and firing up imagination. Metal at its best!

German Thrash legends Accu§er will release their new album ”The Mastery” on January 26th via Metal Blade Records!
Statement of the band about the new album:
“2017 has been quite busy for us, as we wanted to come back with a bang and to present you a more than decent follow up to ‘The Forlorn Divide’. For us, ‘The Mastery’ is the essence of what Accu§er is all about. It definitely feels like the angry newborn child of ‘Who Dominates Who’ and ‘Repent’. We just hope all you thrashers out there are going to enjoy this record as much as we do!”
As of today, you can watch the video for the first single ”Mission: Missle” at metalblade.com/accuser – at the same location you can pre-order the album in the following formats:
–180g black vinyl
–aubergine marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–black purple splattered vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 100 copies)
–pastel pink/violet marbled vinyl (US exclusive – limited to 160 copies)
”The Mastery” track listing:
01. Mission: Missile
02. The Real World
03. Solace in Sorrow
04. Time for Silence
05. My Skin
09. Into the Black
10. The Mastery
Accu§er has been in a constant songwriting mode all over the past year. Combined with the energy and spontaneity from several live shows the songs came together very quickly. Together with longtime producer Martin Buchwalter they put together the record in the summer of 2017 at well-known Gernhart Studio (Destruction, Tankard and many more). For the band ”The Mastery”, is some kind of missing link between the technical virtuosity of an album like ”Who Dominates Who” and the more basic, heavy approach of ”Repent”. Best of both worlds so to say and not only for the band the best album since their comeback in 2008. ”The Mastery” contains all of the elements that define the Accu§er sound: heavy, chunky thrash riffs, aggressive vocals with a touch of melody – in addition to the high-class guitar solos by youngster Dennis Rybakowski. When it comes to the lyrical side of their songs, Accu§er still raises their voices to denounce social grievances.

Frank Kimpel – bass

Russia’s leading and finest pagan metal band Arkona, who are set to release their brand new album ”Khram” on January 19th, 2018 with Napalm Records, have just unveiled a first teaser and exclusive album preview! Get your ears on this first sneak peak, featuring all tracks from Arkona‘s upcoming album right HERE!
A Khram, the Russian word for temple, is shrouded in natural mysticism slumbering behind nocturnal treetops, yet open to everyone. The sincerity and depth that binds all five band members together resonate in the sumptuously dark cover artwork and frontlady Masha`s lyrics, that are written in her own blood (which is also part of the artwork)! Arkona may have used sound samples in their early days, but nowadays cellos, brass parts, wind instruments and throat singing are recorded live meticulously and flow naturally into the band’s harsh metal tunes:
King-sized songs effortlessly shift from blackened pagan metal masterpieces to epic tracks with crystal-clear melodies and piano infusions. So better mark your calendars for January 19th, 2018, as Arkona‘s”Khram” is an exuberant and demanding affair that defies genre boundaries with untamable spirit!
Coming as CD Digi Pack, Digital Download and LP Gatefold editions,”Khram”is now available to pre-order HERE!

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are announcing the release of their sophomore full-length, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” through the singer’s label Housecore in the Americas and in license via Season of Mist in other parts of the world on January 26th, 2018.
The band is now releasing the title-track “Choosing Mental Illness” outside of the Americas at the link below.
Philip H. Anselmo stated this about the new album:
“Our new album, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is going to get hated. It’s going to get loved. Like every record, I’ve ever done, I put zero expectations upon my peers, critics, or the general fucking public. If you take one thing away from it, let it be this: Do not bog yourself down to one brand, character, or whatever. Have the guts to spread your wings and fucking flourish. I can promise you this is a beginning. As my music trickles out over the next two years, it’s going to be quite the roller coaster ride. This new Illegals is just the tip of the whole fucking avalanche.”
The line-up of the The Illegals has changed on several positions since album one. This is what Phil has to say about his new crew: “Their creative input is fucking fantastic. This is something that was very different from the first record where I was very staunch. I wanted it to be ugly. I was very firm that I was writing every fucking note. The thought was, ‘This is my contribution to ugly music right this second in a heavy metal vein.’ That was great at the time. ‘Walk Through Exits Only’ made its own little statement that I am a free agent and I belong to no single band. This time, I worked closely with everyone. We tried different ideas together. It made the spirit of this thing come alive even more because of the enthusiasm these guys bring. It enhanced the integrity of the project.”
On further news, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are also releasing artwork and album details of ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”, which can be viewed below.
1. Little Fucking Heroes
3. Choosing Mental Illness
4. The Ignorant Point
7. Photographic Taunts
8. Finger Me
9. Invalid Colubrine Frauds
10. Mixed Lunatic Results
Philip H. Anselmo is an iconic artist, maybe a little bruised, scarred, singed, and somewhat battered by time, himself, and others. But the Texan remains proudly standing, unbent, and still angry. Loved and hated, attacked and praised, Phil is not ready to go down into the archives of musical history without a fight.
His new cooperation with the band that Phil himself created, The Illegals, is as brutal, kicking, lashing, and fury-filled as one could expect from this artist and Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals‘ debut ”Walk Through Exits Only” (2013). Their sophomore album, ‘Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue’ is a much the metaphorical fist in the face and display of force as his adherents could wish for.
”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is not a simple repeat of the past – as tempting as that might sound, considering that no other artist left a deeper mark on metal in the 90’s than Pantera. Raging, roaring, and bulldozing their way through the metal scene, the Texans have left a lasting legacy. At their front stood anger and hostility personified ,Philip H. Anselmo. What followed for example with Down and Superjoint Ritual has further cemented the singer’s reputation as a living legend. As an artist in his own right, Phil finally emancipated onto a solo-path with ”Walk Through Exits Only”, which enabled him to do exactly as he pleased – with no need to compromise on anything.
Now, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” follows along the path that Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals debut has carved, but takes the mega-heavy, angry monster born out of mating the visceral aggression and power of Pantera with the devastating thrash and Southern sludge that Phil and the New Orleans scene pioneered.
Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are back and about to mercilessly install ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” as a new benchmark for extreme heaviness.
Philip H. Anselmo: vocals
Mike DeLeon: lead guitars
Jose “Blue” Gonzales: drums
Stephen “Schteve” Taylor: guitars
Walter Howard: bass
Formed in 2015, Anarcheon features vocalist Kaija Kinney, founder of Metalocalypstick Fest, the BC metal fest celebrating women in metal, along with guitarist Clayton Bach, bassist Sylvain Maltais and drummer Steve “Machine” Richardo (ex-Messiah, ex-Green Jellÿ).
With a band name playing off the word Anarchy, Anarcheon is more of a Frankenstein of their various influences with their powerhouse of shemonic screams, catchy riffs and energetic heavy bass leads. Stealing the hearts and souls of fans in the Vancouver area and beyond since their inception, the quartet recently unleashed their new EP “Stratusfear” this past October.
Their first music video “Etherous Claws” directed by Markham Samuels and produced by Whitelf Films tells the story of Anarcheon using the power of heavy metal to summon an ancient vampire from her slumber.
Statement of the vocalist Kaija Kinney about the music video and the new EP:
“This is our first music video so of course we are super stoked about it. We wanted to have a bit of a back story on the song in a more poetic way rather than literal. Our good friend with Whitelf Films did an amazing job getting our vision onto screen and looking sharp! And for those checking out our EP, it’s basically a coming together of all four members. We had so much fun writing these songs. All four of us have very different music tastes so it was very interesting coming together with such chemistry and creating something that we were all stoked about. We are already gearing up for a full album!”
On January 12th, Metal Blade Records will re-issue two of Fates Warning‘s fan-favorite albums, ”Perfect Symmetry” (1989) and ”Parallels” (1991)!

Many words come to mind when you hear the name Cannibal Corpse, but one truly defines the soon-to-be thirty-year death metal veterans: Unstoppable. Produced by Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Goatwhore).
”Red Before Black” serves to not only reiterate this but to once more raise the stakes, making it very clear who sets the standard when it comes to always compelling music that is equally brutal and complex. Moreover, the band have pushed themselves again, ensuring that it stands out from their catalog.
Zev Deans stated this:
“After crawling through abandoned buildings, crashing our van into a tree in the middle of a scene, witnessing a real stabbing and drenching ourselves in fake blood in a derelict park at 5am, we can safely say this was a proper introduction to the slasher genre for Panorama Programming. We brought a slab of fresh meat back from a rotting metropolis, and we’re serving it to you raw. Come and get it.”

Bassist Alex Webster stated this about their new album:
“Throughout our career we’ve tried to improve the precision of both our musical execution and our album production, while still maintaining full-on aggression. ‘Red Before Black’ continues in that direction, but might go even further on the aggressive side of things. It’s definitely precise, but it has a rawness to it that goes beyond anything we’ve done recently,”
Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz stated this also about the new album:
“We really worked super hard crafting these songs, practicing them, and getting them where we wanted to be more so than on any of our previous albums,” adds drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz and as Alex said, musically I think it’s the most raw sound we’ve had – and at the same time I think it’s our most focused, tightest and catchiest record.”
