Returning to the depths of the Boar’s Nest in their hometown of Salt Lake City to record once again with engineer extraordinaire Andy Patterson (SubrosaDeathblow,Dreadnought, et al), ”Conqueror’s Oath was hammer-forged in a whirlwind month of mayhem and mastered by Dave Otero of Flatline Audio (Satan’s HostNightbringerKhemmis, et al).

The Hypothesis releases new lyric video and the song ”Illusion”!

Following on from their acclaimed debut Origin”, Finnish melodic death metal quintet The Hypothesis today release their first new music since summer 2016. “With ‘Illusion Now”, The Hypothesis comes with a darker and heavier grip with a beautiful and melancholic chorus.

Statement of the Guitarist Jusso Turkki about the song:

”The song itself tells about going to a place so dark, that you want to give up on everything and just let go,”

The Hypothesis is a modern melodic death metal act formed during the deadly cold winter of 2009 in Kouvola, Finland. Nowadays based in Helsinki the band swears in the name of heaviness, groove & catchy melodies, still not forgetting technicality and crunchy riffs. The Hypothesis main man Juuso Turkki came up with the band’s name wanting to create an individual state of imagination.

In the year 2009, The Hypothesis recorded an EP carrying the name Nightshade”. In January 2011 this was followed by 2 songs ”Weak Story” and ”Shades To Escape’‘. The Hypothesis had their first line-up changes when a drummer called Rolf Pilve (from Stratovarius) joined the band. With Rolf band recorded their third song, ”Scarface”.

Among successful releases, The Hypothesis has conquered many famous festival-stages in Finland such as Nummirock and Qstock. The band qualified as a winner from Finland’s Wacken Metal Battle qualifiers in the Qstock festival. The Hypothesis has also shared stages with melodic death & doom giants like Swallow The Sun, Scar Symmetry, Wolfheart & Before The Dawn.

In the fall of 2012 The Hypothesis started fresh with entirely new line-up and locked themselves in the middle of a dark forest in Viitasaari to record their debut-album, Origin. After almost four-year-silence The Hypothesis recruited the last new members from Finnish metal scene whom have contributed in bands like Naildown, Paradise Lost, Dimebad Beyond Forever, Dead Shape Figure, Codeon etc. and the band released their debut via Inverse Records to critical acclaim. 2016 also saw the band releasing their first music video for ”Eye For An Eye” before embarking on a solid touring schedule with the likes of Wolfheart & Swallow The Sun.

ABBATH band picture

Abbath are touring in support of their chart-storming eponymous debut album. Artwork and track-list of ‘Abbath‘ can be viewed below.

When Abbath announced that he had left Immortal, it sent massive shockwaves through the metal scene. The iconic frontman had long become the “face” of the Norwegian black scene, his image synonymous with this style.

Now the Norwegian giant returns with his new band  Abbath and a crushing debut album of the same name. The opening triplet “To War”, “Winter Bane”, and “Ashes of the Damned”unleash all the fury of a Nordic blizzard at full force. Yet the following “Ocean of Wounds” proves that his new band is equally at home in writing anthemic mid-tempo hymns.

Abbath‘s characteristic riffing shines clearly through it all: heavy, harsh, and yet catchy and melodic with a touch of epic Bathory, Motorhead, and even Kiss.

At the same time, there is no danger of repeating the formula of Immortal or the mastermind’s other project under the moniker I, which was shared with King. The bass player from Bergen has again joined Abbath and brought his impressive song-writing skills to the battlefield.

Gorgoroth, God Seed, and Ov Hell bear witness to King’s exceptional talent as a composer, while contributions to Audrey Horne and Sahg demonstrate his wide stylistic range. The final keystone to Abbath lies in the outstanding drumming delivered by the mysterious Creature. The trio has already proved its worth as a live entity at several headlining festival shows as well, where Abbath were joined by an additional guitarist. ‘Abbath‘ impresses from start to finish. This is exactly the album that all fans of this particular Bergen brand of black metal have been hoping for. Hold on tight or get blown away. Abbath are here now and ready to conquer the world!

Cynic release stunning new song called ”Humanoid”!

Cynic have released a digital single titled “Humanoid”. This song marks the first new music from the progressive pioneers since the Americans’ 2014 full-length, ”Kindly Bent To Free Us”.

Frontman Paul Masvidal stated this about the song:

” ”Humanoid” is a portrait of contrasts, like those between struggle and stillness, or the immediate against the limitless. Our Stargate is planet Earth consciousness, the transmitter. We, sentient creatures of light, are alive now — on a sphere, floating in a galaxy fixed amidst the infinite. It’s quite miraculous to be aware of this, and it invokes a sense of urgency and empowerment that is unlike anything else.”

“Humanoid” was recorded by Paul Masvidal and longtime Cynic bassist Sean Malone. The song also and marks the debut of the band’s new drummer, Matt Lynch, who brings a renewed sense of energy to ‘Cynic’s rhythm section.

CYNIC picture current line-up

For the mixing of “Humanoid”,  Cynic partnered with renowned engineer Adam “Nolly” Getgood. Sean Malone comments: “Nolly’s approach is equal parts expertise and intuition. Working with him was quick, clear, but most of all, musical.”

The artwork for “Humanoid” features a detail from the painting “Ayahuasca Dream” by Robert VenosaCynic‘s longtime collaborator and celebrated an artist who sadly passed away in 2011.

On further news, Sweden’s award-winning Strandberg* Guitars are announcing a new Paul Masvidal signature instrument today, the “Masvidalien Cosmo”, which can be viewed at the picture below.

Paul Masvidal by Darrin Noble

Paul Masvidal stated this about  the Strandberg Masvidalien Cosmo custom guitar:
“Strandberg breaks new ground yet again. Kabir, the 15th-century Indian mystic poet said ‘Wherever you are is the entry point’, and the Masvidalien Cosmo captures this spirit as an instrument.
When I first started conversations with Ola about the guitar, words such as ‘effortless’, ‘ease’, ‘elegance’, and ‘versatility’ came to mind. Not only was this captured with the instrument, but it was also taken further. The finished product managed to strike a rare alchemy, where everything from the way it sounds, feels, and appears fell seamlessly into place: the guitar both expresses and is itself an expression.”
Strandberg is in a league of its own, holding the greatness of progressive design at its heart. Ola’s work benefits the present by not being bound to it. It’s truly an honor to be working with a visionary company like Strandberg.”

Sean Malone: bass, stick
Matt Lynch: drums

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals release brutal third new song called “Delinquent”!

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are premiering the third crushing song taken from the legendary singer’s sophomore album with his personal band, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”. The full-length will be out on January 26th, 2018.

Phil Anselmo stated this about the song  “Delinquent”:

“It’s old school-meets-ugly-school. Good shit.”

PHILIP H. ANSELMP & THE ILLEGALS album cover

Tracklist:
1. Little Fucking Heroes
2. Utopian
3. Choosing Mental Illness
4. The Ignorant Point
5. Individual
6. Delinquent
7. Photographic Taunts
8. Finger Me
9. Invalid Colubrine Frauds
10. Mixed Lunatic Results

Philip H. Anselmo is an iconic artist, maybe a little bruised, scarred, singed, and somewhat battered by time, himself, and others. But the Texan remains proudly standing, unbent, and still angry. Loved and hated, attacked and praised, Phil is not ready to go down into the archives of musical history without a fight.

His new cooperation with the band that Phil himself created, The Illegals, is as brutal, kicking, lashing, and fury-filled as one could expect from this artist and  Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals‘ debut ”Walk Through Exits Only” (2013). Their sophomore album, ‘Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue’ is a much the metaphorical fist in the face and display of force as his adherents could wish for.

”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is not a simple repeat of the past – as tempting as that might sound, considering that no other artist left a deeper mark on metal in the 90’s than Pantera. Raging, roaring, and bulldozing their way through the metal scene, the Texans have left a lasting legacy. At their front stood anger and hostility personified ,Philip H. Anselmo. What followed for example with Down and Superjoint Ritual has further cemented the singer’s reputation as a living legend. As an artist in his own right, Phil finally emancipated onto a solo-path with ”Walk Through Exits Only”, which enabled him to do exactly as he pleased – with no need to compromise on anything.

Now, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”  follows along the path that  Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals debut has carved, but takes the mega-heavy, angry monster born out of mating the visceral aggression and power of Pantera with the devastating thrash and Southern sludge that Phil and the New Orleans scene pioneered.

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are back and about to mercilessly install ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” as a new benchmark for extreme heaviness.

Line-up:
Philip H. Anselmo: vocals
Mike DeLeon: lead guitars
Jose “Blue” Gonzales: drums
Stephen “Schteve” Taylor: guitars
Walter Howard: bass

Warbringer announce Special “Waking Into Nightmares” shows in April!

2017 was a great year for Warbringer. Many felt the band released their ultimate work with Woe to the Vanquished” and the group proceeded to tour the US and Europe several times on the back of it alongside bands like Dark Tranquillity, Destruction, Death Angel, Havok, Darkest Hour, Suicidal Angels and Exmortus.
2018 will produce its own set of historic moments as explains Warbringer singer John Kevill:
This year we will be writing new material, but that doesn’t mean the live war machine will stop rolling… in addition to our Japanese “Thrash Domination” festivals with Testament and Exodus, we are pleased to announce a small run of West Coast shows in April of 2018. Since we have been playing Woe to the Vanquished in its entirety this last year, to great response, we decided we liked the full album format live. It is really cool being able to deliver the whole of a record, front to back, in a live setting, and so on these limited April dates, we will be doing that with a fan favorite from our back catalog… Waking into Nightmares.”
Released in 2009, Waking Into Nightmares” was produced by Exodus guitarist Gary Holt and engineered by Zack Ohren (Immolation, Cattle Decapitation, Suffocation) and showcased a more mature Warbringer who not only displayed their continued traditional thrash metal assault but peppered it with more dark and heavy death metal influences. The album was recognized for the band branching out into their own unique and continued evolution of thrash, as well as for the addition of the late Nic Ritter on drums who brought a more technical and progressive style of playing, that continues to date with the current rhythmic work of drummer Carlos Cruz.
“We will play the full record live as both a treat for fans as well as a tribute to Nic Ritter, who passed away in 2017. That record pushed the boundaries forward for Warbringer and we look forward to punishing everyone with it live this coming April. See you in the pit.”
Waking Into Nightmares Shows:
4/27: Los Angeles, CA @ The Whisky
4/28: Santa Ana, CA @ Malone’s

Swedish Death Metallers LIK sign to Metal Blade Records!

In the dirt where fallen icons lay to rest, the maggots and seeds spawned in 2014 a new creation. This took the ugly form of LIK, which fittingly means corpse in Swedish. An un-dead creation which offers a plate of savory old school death metal.

Metal Blade Records welcomes LIK to their roster.

Statement of the band about the collaboration with Metal Blade Records: “The huge impact Metal Blade has had on the scene is something you can’t overlook and being a part of this family is a ‘pinch yourself to see if you’re dreaming’ scenario! We can’t stress enough about how psyched we are and it’s just another sign that no-frills death metal is still alive and breathing!

Walking the earth for three cold winters, and with the first offer named ”Mass Funeral Evocation”, it’ll have a sister released in May of 2018.

LIK has no passage as this entity is devoted to make a permanent mark on those who lay down their souls to Rock’n’Roll. The possessed souls to carry out the sonics are Tomas Åkvik (Guitar/Vocals), Niklas Sandin (Guitar/Bass) and Christofer Barkensjö (Drums).

Hamferð releases third song ”Stygd”!

Doomster Hamferð from the Faroe Islands will release their new album ”Támsins likam” this Friday, January 12th, via Metal Blade Records!

The band has now released the third single taken off ”Támsins likam”, please surf over tometalblade.com/hamferd to listen to ”Stygd”!

At the same location, you can watch the lyric video for the first single ”Hon syndras” as well as the production video for the 2nd single ”Frosthvarv”! Make sure to check out the pre-order section, you can purchase ”Támsins likam” in the following formats:

–jewel case-CD
–180g black vinyl
–dark grey marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 300 copies)
–pastel violet marbled vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–milky clear vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 200 copies)
–transparent blue vinyl (TUTL exclusive – limited to 100 copies)
–light grey black marbled vinyl (US exclusive – limited to 200 copies)

Roughly translated as ”Body of the mist”,Támsins likam is an attempt to create the most intriguing, honest and unique Hamferð experience yet. It is nothing less than a pinnacle; a culmination of many years of refining both sound and songwriting, spearheaded by a strong desire to keep progressing and expanding. This has resulted in an album bustling with elements ancient and familiar, violent and strange, earthen and spectral – all the while fiercely seeking to surprise and move the listener.

Once again recorded in Studio Bloch in the Faroe Islands, but this time mixed by the legendary Swedish sound wizard Daniel Bergstrand in his Dugout Productions studio, Támsins likam’ exhibits a rawer and more mature version of the known Hamferð sound. The somewhat harsh and bare soundscape deliberately contrasts with the refined compositions, while at the same aligning with the increasingly honest and violent lyrical content.

“Faroese doom metal” is a powerful sound. Exclusive to this self-styled tag is Hamferð. For a near decade, the funeral dressed sextet has been casting a unique expression rooted in conceptual tragedy and intense, narrative doom metal.

Faroese history and folklore are mixed together with grand atmospheres, a trademark that has earned worldwide attraction. Stages at festivals such as Inferno, Midgardsblot, Tuska, Summer Breeze, Wacken and much more have been turned into funerary ceremonies.

Touring with bands like Amorphis and Moonsorrow has further garnered the band a respected reputation due to strong yet solemn live performances.

The lyrical and conceptual approach is ambitious in scope. People are drawn to it, even though the band sings in their native tongue, Faroese. With a highly engaging idea concerning lyrics and songwriting, the hour has arrived to close a conceptual trilogy which commenced with the 2010 EPVilst er síðsta fet’, continued with the internationally acclaimed 2013 full-length album ”Evst, and is now concluded with ”Támsins likam”.
