SINISTRO by Inés Achando

When  Sinistro emerged out of a spontaneous spark on a hot summer’s day spent dallying in the studio, nobody could have predicted the meteoric rise of these fascinating Portuguese doom rockers. Their first album, a new beginning after some different earlier attempts, was strongly cherished by critics and fans alike, with invitations to prestigious festivals following at an astonishing pace.

Now Sinistro presents the follow-up to the highly praised ”Semente”(2016) and even the first impression allows to state that ”Sangue Cássia” marks another huge step in the career of the remarkable band fronted by vocalist extraordinaire Patrícia Andrade. The new full-length clearly shows the confidence and experience gained from their numerous live performances.

Sinistro succeeds in expanding their sonic horizon while keeping all the elements that made ‘Semente’ special. The melancholy and painful longing expressed in the national chant of Portugal, Fado is seamlessly forged together with rock and metal.  Sinistro harness erotic energy and lustful moments as well as bitterness and regret. Silky softness and velvet warmth contrast sharply with harsh edges and stinging spikes.

Sinistro started out by exploring a wide range of reference points for their self-titled debut, which was released in 2012, such as Massive AttackEnnio Morricone, Radiohead, Faith No More, Angelo Badalementi, David Bowie, Swans, Unwound, Mogwai, and Crippled Black Phoenix to name but a few possible comparisons.

On their following effort, ”Cidade” (2013), the Portuguese welcomed singer Patrícia Andrade, who quickly turned out to be the missing element in Sinistro‘s path snaking between elegant doom rock and a soundtrack like an approach. Massive guitar walls combined with gritty keyboard layers and a deeply emotional vocal performance established the band as an essential name in the Portuguese music scene.

Having perfected their signature musical handwriting on ”Semente”Sinistro are now adding experience and maturity to their songs. Each track on ”Sangue Cássia” is its own story and cosmos that will engulf and swallow the listener. Take your time to profoundly enjoy and marvel at the wonders laid out by ”Sangue Cássia”!

Niklas Kvarforth is not the first artist struggling with mental illness and related issues. The erratic Swede is also not the first musician whose inner demons are part of the creative genius. Yet in the world of metal, his band Shining remains as a unique and outstanding act in terms of talent and musical excellence. Never shy about his personal afflictions, Niklas Kvarforth is once again baring his tortured soul with ”X – Varg Utan Flock”.

His anger, his confusion, his pain, and his torment are all becoming tangible on the tenth album in the band’s long history. For a point of reference, the legendary ”V – Halmstad” release probably offers the most appropriate comparison. Yet all the influences Shining fused into their previous masterpiece, ‘IX – Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends’ (2015) are also still present. Eclectic influences from progressive rock, jazz, classical music, and even faint traces of pop have left their mark. In addition to the broad musical spectrum on display, Niklas Kvarforth’s deeply emotional laments emerging from the dark depths of his twisted mind go beyond the usual scale of metal bands in their great vocal scope and variety.

Founded in 1996 by KvarforthShining self-released ”Submit to Self-Destruction” in 1998 and spawned the term “suicidal black metal” with this debut 7″. A couple years after first full-length, ”I – Within Deep Dark Chambers” (2000) and sophomore album, ”II – Livets Ändhållplats” (2001) had cut deep marks into the underground scene, Niklas replaced his whole crew, which started a continuous cycle of line-up changes. With Mayhem drummer Hellhammer on board, ”III – Angst” (2003) and ”IV – The Eerie Cold” (2005) began to gather major press attention. At the same time, Shining focused on bringing their vision and often controversially received live performances to Europe.

Yet Kvarforth’s mental health led to cancellations, physical and psychological fights within the band, and finally a break-up. Not content to let things rest after his breakdown, the restless singer returned with new members and the acclaimed masterpiece, ”V – Halmstad” in 2007. By then Shining had reached headliner status and toured with other great acts such as Satyricon and Mayhem.

Several line-up changes later, the Swede recorded two albums in one session: ”VI – Klagopsalmer” was released in 2009, to be followed by ”VII – Född Förlorare” two years later. The band also received their first gold disc for the single ”Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” in Sweden.

After rotating more musicians in and out, Shining returned with ‘Redefining Darkness’ (2012) and a less aggressive, yet more sinister sound. Before signing to Season of Mist, the band released the project ”8 ½ – Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd”, which featured six of Kvarforth’s favorite vocalists.

In August 2014, Shining entered Andy LaRocque’s Sonic Train Studios to record their ninth album, ”IX – Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends” as the sum of Niklas Kvarforth’s musical evolution and experience. More line-up changes and breakdowns followed. Yet Niklas Kvarforth clawed his way up from the depths once more and returned to Andy LaRocque and Sonic Train Studios to record another album. The result, ”X – Varg Utan Flock” is a musical masterpiece far beyond simple genre limitations and a shining tribute to the achievement that a troubled mind is capable of when driven by a passionate will to excel and overcome. Listen with respect.

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals reveal first track called ”Choosing Mental Illness” and details of new album ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”!

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are announcing the release of their sophomore full-length, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”  through the singer’s label Housecore in the Americas and in license via Season of Mist in other parts of the world on January 26th, 2018.

The band is now releasing the title-track “Choosing Mental Illness” outside of the Americas at the link below.

Philip H. Anselmo stated this about the new album:

“Our new album, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is going to get hated. It’s going to get loved. Like every record, I’ve ever done, I put zero expectations upon my peers, critics, or the general fucking public. If you take one thing away from it, let it be this: Do not bog yourself down to one brand, character, or whatever. Have the guts to spread your wings and fucking flourish. I can promise you this is a beginning. As my music trickles out over the next two years, it’s going to be quite the roller coaster ride. This new Illegals is just the tip of the whole fucking avalanche.”

The line-up of the The Illegals  has changed on several positions since album one. This is what Phil has to say about his new crew: “Their creative input is fucking fantastic. This is something that was very different from the first record where I was very staunch. I wanted it to be ugly. I was very firm that I was writing every fucking note. The thought was, ‘This is my contribution to ugly music right this second in a heavy metal vein.’ That was great at the time. ‘Walk Through Exits Only’ made its own little statement that I am a free agent and I belong to no single band. This time, I worked closely with everyone. We tried different ideas together. It made the spirit of this thing come alive even more because of the enthusiasm these guys bring. It enhanced the integrity of the project.”

On further news,  Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are also releasing artwork and album details of ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”, which can be viewed below.

PHILIP H. ANSELMP & THE ILLEGALS album cover

Tracklist:
1. Little Fucking Heroes
2. Utopian
3. Choosing Mental Illness
4. The Ignorant Point
5. Individual
6. Delinquent
7. Photographic Taunts
8. Finger Me
9. Invalid Colubrine Frauds
10. Mixed Lunatic Results

Philip H. Anselmo is an iconic artist, maybe a little bruised, scarred, singed, and somewhat battered by time, himself, and others. But the Texan remains proudly standing, unbent, and still angry. Loved and hated, attacked and praised, Phil is not ready to go down into the archives of musical history without a fight.

His new cooperation with the band that Phil himself created, The Illegals, is as brutal, kicking, lashing, and fury-filled as one could expect from this artist and  Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals‘ debut ”Walk Through Exits Only” (2013). Their sophomore album, ‘Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue’ is a much the metaphorical fist in the face and display of force as his adherents could wish for.

”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” is not a simple repeat of the past – as tempting as that might sound, considering that no other artist left a deeper mark on metal in the 90’s than Pantera. Raging, roaring, and bulldozing their way through the metal scene, the Texans have left a lasting legacy. At their front stood anger and hostility personified ,Philip H. Anselmo. What followed for example with Down and Superjoint Ritual has further cemented the singer’s reputation as a living legend. As an artist in his own right, Phil finally emancipated onto a solo-path with ”Walk Through Exits Only”, which enabled him to do exactly as he pleased – with no need to compromise on anything.

Now, ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue”  follows along the path that  Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals debut has carved, but takes the mega-heavy, angry monster born out of mating the visceral aggression and power of Pantera with the devastating thrash and Southern sludge that Phil and the New Orleans scene pioneered.

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are back and about to mercilessly install ”Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue” as a new benchmark for extreme heaviness.

Line-up:
Philip H. Anselmo: vocals
Mike DeLeon: lead guitars
Jose “Blue” Gonzales: drums
Stephen “Schteve” Taylor: guitars
Walter Howard: bass

Shining premiere and streaming of the new song “Gyllene Portanas Bro” is available today, song is a part of the forthcoming ”X – Varg Utan Flock”!

Premiere and streaming of Swedish black metal maniacs Shining for the song  “Gyllene Portanas Bro” is available, this song is a part of the  forthcoming album ”X – Varg Utan Flock” which is going to be out in January 5th 2018 via Season Of Mist Records.

Here is a statment of mastermind Niklas Kvarforth about the song:

“The track, ”Gyllene Portarnas Bro” has been in the works since 1999 and is one of the calmer moments on this record. Built around three different parts, it was originally intended for the album, ‘Livets Ändhållplats’. It was later reworked for ‘Redefining Darkness’, but it wasn’t until now that this song finally started to make sense. Lyrically, it speaks of the seduction of the human mind and spirit, the ultimate destruction of the life cycle of the one being seduced. Indeed, this track sets the mood for the violent darkness that follows.”

SEPTICFLESH by Stella Mouzi

SepticFlesh are painting an apocalyptic vision and make full use of their impressive musical palette consisting of death metal and orchestral colours on their tenth full-length  ”Codex Omega”.

From their alpha EP ”Temple of the Lost Race” that was released one year after their founding in 1990, the Greek musicians have pushed the limits of the metal genre and continued to explore new sonic path with every following release from their debut album ”Mystic Places of Dawn” (1994) to the stunning ‘Sumerian Daemons’ (2003), which have in the meantime all been re-issued by Season of Mist.

Yet  SepticFlesh had clearly come into their own sound when they unleashed their celebrated comeback album after a five-year hiatus that re-charged their artistic batteries. ”Communion” (2008) offered a well-balanced amalgamation of metal elements that were freely drawn from the darker side of the genre including death, black, and gothic metal with epic orchestral arrangements. This symphonic excellence was based on guitarist Christos Antoniou bringing to bear the fruits of his academic studies of classical composition, which he passed with honours and distinction.

With a clear musical compass to navigate, SepticFlesh continued to explore their sound and the compositional possibilities of this new-found metal continent. ”The Great Mass” (2011) and ”Titan” (2014) saw the Greeks evolving at fast speed and at the same time gathering adherents as well as critical praise in ever growing numbers. Extended touring on both sides of the Atlantic and performances at about every important festival further consolidated the bands burgeoning status.

Although the biblical omega marks the end, SepticFlesh on the contrary are reaching their current peak with ”Codex Omega”, an album that clearly witnesses the Greek visionaries having come to maturity and expert craftsmanship in every sense.

SepticFlesh are the undisputable masters of symphonic death metal and ”Codex Omega”is the perfect proof for this bold statement.

Der Weg einer Freiheit released new album ”Finisterre” and announced new guitarist!

Der Weg einer Freiheit are unleashing their complete forthcoming album, ”Finisterre”. The new masterpiece of the rising German black metal stars will be released this Friday, August 25th via Season of Mist Records.

Stament of the Frontman Nikita Kamprad about the new upcoming album and thier former band member and their new member:

“Today, we are finally able to present our full new album ”Finisterre” to you. We hope that you will enjoy it! However, we also need to let you know that our long-time guitarist Sascha decided to leave the band to pursue his own musical vision. Whenever possible, he will still be helping us out as a backliner. We thank Sascha for all his passion and dedication to this band and wish him the very best for his future endeavours! We take this opportunity to introduce our new guitarist Nico, who has already stepped in as live guitarist for some shows in 2011 and is now joining us full time. The past three gigs with him, including our release show at Summer Breeze, went great and we are more than ready to finally unleash ‘Finisterre’ and see you on tour in September and October!”

Statment of former guitarist Sascha:

“I am using this opportunity to give a big round of thanks to everyone who contributed to  Der Weg einer Freiheit in any way and any form over the past six years and everyone who is going to do this in future, because I will remain with the band behind the stage whenever possible and you might see me jump around before a show to make sure that everything runs smoothly. This way I can keep working with my best friends. My decision to leave the stage was sure not an easy one and took me a long time, but I just have to move on in a musical sense and dedicate my creativity for my other band Fuck You And Die and another new metal band venture that is taking a huge part of my time, passion and care. If you would like to connect and catch up with me ,feel free to hit me up on the socials. Please enjoy ”Finisterre” as it is a magnificent piece of art and I believe in Nikita’s way of creating music. Thank you again and see you soon! Probably sooner than you might think. Sincerely, Sascha.”

The musical puzzle that adds up to become  Der Weg einer Freiheit  turns into something more complex – yet also clearer defined on the band’s fourth studio album, ”Finisterre”. The original pieces are still in play: the aggressive German directness akin to Endstille and a penchant for brooding melancholy as embodied by Imperium Dekadenz. Spiralling psychedelic moments comparable to Deafheaven and Wolves In The Throne Room also find their place, as well as a knack for majestic melodies that shows parallels in Swedish black metal spearheaded by Marduk and Dark Funeral.

Yet while  Der Weg einer Freiheit are clearly progressing along the lines laid out by their previous acclaimed effort, ‘Stellar’, the band has found a way to make these pieces fit more seamlessly. ”Finisterre” flows together into a coherent picture that stresses the Germans’ unique approach and sound. This album marks the point where Der Weg einer Freiheit turn their various influences into a work entirely of their own expression despite never trying to cover up their roots. This impressive maturity has been reached through several stages.

The frontman was first heard on third full-length ”Stellar” (2015), which saw  Der Weg einer Freiheit gaining traction across the pond as well as expanding their European base. Having performed along such diverse acts as Wolves In The Throne Room, Neaera, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amenra, Crippled Black Phoenix, and Downfall Of Gaia as well as playing prestigious festivals such as Graspop, Hellfest, Resurrection, Roadburn, Summer Breeze, and Wacken  festival has honed the band’s songwriting skills to razor-sharp precision.

Finisterre” clearly stands at the apex  for now of the steep climb that Der Weg einer Freiheit  have taken. This German star is finally shining in full black.

Der Weg einer Freiheit have previously announced a European headlining tour supported by French brothers in spirit, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber and the recently added Inter Arma.

Vulture Industries released official music video for ”As the World Burns”, revealed some details about the new upcoming album ”Strange Times”!

Norwegian metal titans Vulture Industries released the video for “As the World Burns” and it was created by renowned Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu. This song is for the new upcoming forth ”Strange Times”, and it will be out in 22th September via Season of Mist Records.

Vulture industries stated this about  “As the World Burns”:

“This song represent the rockier side of our new album and is one of my personal favourites. ‘As the World Burns’ deals with the interdependence of extreme world views that need each other to justify their existence – a theme that is quite relevant in our strange and hazy present. Once more we have teamed up with our friend and sixth band member, the brilliant Mr. Costin Chioreanu for a video. Of course, Costin also created the album artwork. These are the first fruits of our continued co-operation and I sincerely promise that there are a lot of more strange harvests to come your way. Take a bite!”

Frontman Bjørnar E. Nilsen adds this about the new album:

“Continuing along the path that we started to explore on ‘The Tower’, I proudly believe ‘Stranger Times’ to be standing out as a defining work for us. It bridges the gap between styles that we have touched upon in the past, while at the same time expands our scope and includes a more solid dose of rock in the mix. To me, it represents our most ‘solid’ album to date and is clearly the best produced one. I am curious to see how our fans will react, but being the kind and intelligent persons that they are, we actually expect a lot of love… and maybe a bit of trash just to remind us that we are mere mortals”.

This video is one strange and amazing music video, Vulture Industries are back to bring out the best in music. Enjoy the travel, through dark and mysterios world, and some kickass avangarde metal music.
